A global ceremony connecting Toc H communities across continents — through the simple, enduring act of lighting a lamp.
Held each year on 11–12 December, the World Chain of Light marks two moments at the heart of Toc H history — the opening of Talbot House in Poperinge, Belgium, and the birthday of our founder, Reverend Philip "Tubby" Clayton.
The ceremony began in 1929 in Perth, Western Australia, and has been observed by Toc H branches around the world ever since. At 9pm local time on 11 December, the host branch lights their lamp. From there, the observance moves westward — each participating branch lighting their own lamp at 9pm in their time zone, until the circle is complete. An unbroken vigil, passing quietly around the globe for twenty-four hours.
Each gathering typically includes a short service and a message from the host branch, shared internationally. Simple, and connecting.
